Two volumes in one. Text is in German and in stylized, "Gothic"-style font. Lacks the two folding maps (but they are included as photocopies). One map shows most of California. The other map comprises ten inset maps of California regions such as San Francisco, Monterey, Santa Barbara, and San Diego. Brown marbled paper-covered boards backed with dark green or black leather. Gilt lettering on spine. All edges once marbled (faded on edges of textblock). 5 1/4" x 8 1/4." All pages, complete (except for maps). Vol. I: [iii] iv-xvi. 1-174. Vol. II: [iii] iv, 1-260. Pages are clean and intact except for fading to marbled edges, slight age toning, a torn corner on one page (does not appear to affect text), and a hole on title page affecting a few words of the title (measures about 1 1/4" x 1/4"; a piece of small paper is tipped in on the verso to cover the hole but does not fill in the text). Binding is tight. Covers are clean and intact overall but have moderate rubbing to front, back, and spine; a few spots of surface chipping on spine (affects what may be a raised band) and front cover (a square-shaped section measuring about 1 1/4" x 1 1/2" is missing); bumped corners; and edge wear. A Good copy. Excerpt from Kurutz, no. 317: "Hartmann, a prolific writer and an expert on mining and mineralogy, fashioned this two-volume work by gathering information from the 'best sources,' namely Duflot de Mofras, Ansted, and Fremont, as well as accounts from English-language newspapers. Chapter nine of volume I deals with mining or washing of gold, and relies on the accounts of Mason, Bryant, and others. Volume II is essentially a guidebook for prospective German adventurers that extolls [sic] the possibilities of California, even without gold. Hartmann also warned his countrymen that the El Dorado is half a world away and the mining is hard work, and only mining engineers and personnel have a good idea of what it takes to mine for gold. He further warned that many difficulties await them and that riches and acceptance in a new land are not guaranteed. The first appendix reproduces the report of Tyrwhitt Brooks (Henry Vizetelly), and the second gives information on quicksilver and the composition of California gold by a British chemist, Dr. Henry.
