Thomas Hood(1799-1845) wrote volumes of cruel and visciously funny poems, stories and songs.This one, first published in 1834, was taken up and sung by Sam Cowell in the early days of the music hall. .Sam Cowell(1820-1864) was born in London and in 1821 went to America as an actor. He was one of the first great stars of the music hall in the early/mid 1850's .His great songs were the Ratcatchers Daughter, Villekins and his Dinah and Alonzo the Brave.He toured America just prior to the Civil war and re- appeared on the music halls in 1861.He died at the very early age of 44.Folio with music. Condition VG.
