This article is about Rhodes and the other Dodecanese (literally, "twelve islands") which were originally owned by the Minoans and Mycenaean Greeks. Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese. In 1912, Italy seized the Dodecanese during the Italo-Turkish War. At the time of this publication, the islands were still controlled by Italy. However, during World War II, they underwent a series of changes in political ownership beginning with Italy's surrender in 1943. Afterward, the Dodecanese became a battleground between German and Allied forces and fell under Germany's control until 1945. After the war, the islands became a British military protectorate and informally became part of Greece again. In 1947, the Dodecanese were officially reunited with Greece.
