HUME of Godscroft, David : THE HISTORY OF THE HOUSES OF DOUGLAS AND ANGUS

HUME of Godscroft, David. THE HISTORY OF THE HOUSES OF DOUGLAS AND ANGUS. Edinburgh, Printed by Evan Tyler, Printer to the King's Most Excellent Majestie, 1643-4. Small folio. (xx)450 [i.e. 440]pp. Second edition. Pages 203-214 repeated, p. 203 being the title page to "The Second Part of the History of the Douglasses, Containing the House of Angus," dated 1643. Printers' ornaments, and two quaint pictorial woodcut initials. Lacks final blank and second leaf (cancelled dedication to Angus). The text of the first edition (1634-9) is here "toned down" and partially anglicized by Evan Tyler. This is the standard text for all editions to date. Trimmed early for binding, affecting some catchwords but no text. Early calf boards with a cluster of floral and pointille tools, almost invisibly rebacked. A.e.g. Light rubbing to extremities. A rare book. (OCLC locates one copy in the USA, at Yale).
