Hunt, John (Baron Hunt) : Original Typescript, Signed. "The Problem" (with Everest) - John Hunt

Ten page clean (no corrections) typescript signed at the final page by John Hunt. Numbered 1 through 10, though the typescript was chapter two in his book "The Ascent of Everest" published in 1953. John Hunt, Baron Hunt (1910-1998) was a British army officer during World War II and is best known as the leader of the successful 1953 British Expedition to Mount Everest. Most of his career was in Bengal during the 1930s and 1940s with extensive climbing in his spare time. A hands on officer without fear he was awarded the Indian Police Medal in 1935; winning the Distinguished Service Order in 1944 in the Italian campaign; and made a CBE in June 1945 for activity in Greece during the uprising. By 1952 he had achieved the rank of colonel. In 1953 he was given an invitation to lead the British Everest expedition because of Hunt's military leadership experience and undoubted climbing credentials. Replacing Eric Shipton as leader caused some friction with the climbing crew including Edmund Hillary, but were soon won round by Hunt's personality and frank admission that the change was badly handled.During April and May 1953 the climb was carried out, though the first pair of climbers (Tom Bourdillon and Charles Evans) were forced back the second pair, New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay of Nepal reached the summit at 11:30 am on 29 May 1953. News of the ascent reached London on the day of Queen Elizabeth's coronation. He received his Knighthood upon returning to England with the climbing team. Among the other awards the team won were the Hubard Medal of the National Geographic Society; the Founder's Medal of the Royal Geographical Society; the Lawrence Medal of the Royal Central Asian Society; honorary degrees from the universities at Aberdeen, Durham and London. The chapter presented here is concerned with the logistics and problems encountered when climbing the mountain. Strength, altitude and acculturation, supplies, establishing base camps at various heights, feeding and resting the manpower involved, weather and cold conditions, and the 21,000 foot barrier which can make or break an expedition. The role that oxygen plays is also covered. He goes into the proper route taken to reach and climb Everest along with surveying the earlier routes taken by other climbers.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Collectible-Fine. Binding: No Binding
