Two volumes. A third volume of Hogarth's illustrations was published in 1798. Contemporary black 3/4 leather binding with gray cloth-covered boards. Gilt lettering on spine. 6" x 9." Volume I: [i]-cxxii, [1]-311, fifty-four black-and-white plates and illustrations, near complete (one plate facing Page xciv is missing, there should be fifty-five plates and illustrations in total). Volume II: [312]-607, thirty-six black-and-white plates, assumed complete (there is no plate accompanying Page 506; the plate of Page "ib." is present which means its corresponding page, Page 506, may or may not have had a plate). Publisher's information: "Pub: June 1. 1791. by J. & J. Boydell, Cheapside, & at the Shakspeare Gallery Pall Mall." Two former owner's signatures in black ink on a front flyleaf, one of which is dated 1914. Pages and covers are clean and intact overall. Binding is tight. Pages are foxed. Slight soiling to the boards. One plate in Vol. II has some loss of text due to the original cut; illustration is unaffected. Very Good copies. John Ireland (?-1808) was a British author and collector of William Hogarth's works. _Hogarth Illustrated_ covers a number of Hogarth's prints and has an art historical bent in which Ireland analyzes said works.
