"This famous map, the first to be drawn of the new province, is an excellent and very detailed summary of the state of geographical knowledge of the region in 1871. It incorporates information from John Palliser and the many different surveys carried out by British Royal Engineers, sent to the new mainland colony in 1858. The Cariboo goldfields are shown. Hydrographic details come from British naval surveys at the same time, and in particular the work of Captain George Henry Richards, who surveyed the southern coast in 1858 and 1859 in anticipation of an increase in shipping traffic. The result was an accurate, detailed map that would stand as the finest map of the mountainous province for many years." (Hayes)
A very important and rare map of British Columbia when it joined the Dominion of Canada in 1871, drawn under the supervision of J.W. Trutch, the Surveyor General and Chief Commissionaire of Lands.
Sir Joseph William Trutch, was an English-born Canadian engineer, surveyor and politician. Colonial governor Anthony Musgrave and Trutch worked together to negotiate British Columbia's entry into the confedereation. In 1870 Trutch travelled to England to negotiate the terms of union with the Imperial Government, it was also during this time in which he arranged with Standford's Georgraphical Establishment in London to print 500 copies of his latest map of British Columbia (known as the 1871 Trutch Map). In 1871 after they secured a promise for the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway, Trutch was then named as British Columbia's first post-confederation lieutenant governor, a position he retained from 1871 to 1876. Following his tenure as lieutenant governor, Trutch was appointed a "Dominion agent for British Columbia", and helped to oversee the construction of the CPR in the province.
Trutch's map of British Columbia became the work upon which all further cartographical work was based on for the region. This map stands as and importand marker in the history of British Columbia.
