Text in Latin.
This is an important early collection of 16th century texts on ancient Rome in all its aspects, collected by Johann Rosinus. First published in 1583 under the title ‘Romanarum antiquitatum’, collections such as this had become necessary as the 16th century drew to a close, as so many texts had appeared on various aspects of ancient Rome life that it became increasingly difficult to obtain all of them, especially the numerous specialized monographs published during the second half of the century. Includes added material and notes of Thomas Dempster, Paolo Manuzio’s ‘De legibus & de senatu,’ Andreas Schott’s work on the patrician families of Rome, and two other dissertations. The engraved plan of Rome is derived from that by Ligorio.
The book describes the city and people of Rome, its gods, temples, buildings, and clergy. Information is also given with regards to the calendar, games, and the forum, adding details pertaining to magistrates, laws, judges, the senate, the military, and also families and tribes.
Joannis Rosini [Rossfeld], 1551-1626, was a German teacher, author, and clergyman who worked at the cathedral in Naumberg, Saxony. Thomas Dempster, 1579-1625, was a Scottish writer, scholar, and poet. Andreas Schott, 1552-1626, was a knowledgable Flemish Jesuit, born in Antwerp, professor of Greek at Toledo, and teacher of rhetoric at Rome.
