Nathaniel Bacon was the half brother of Sir Francis Bacon and the son of Nicholas Bacon. He was a member of the Suffolk committee for the defence against the Royalists, an M.P. for Cambridge University and Master of requests during Richard Cromwell's protectorate. The book, according to the Dictionary of National Biography, is a sort of constitutional history of England, showing much knowledge of the development of its institutions, civil and ecclesiastical, and pervaded by a strong spirit of hostility to the claims of the royal prerogative and hierarchical pretensions. , Graesse I:247.
