Former owner's inscription in black ink on front free endpaper: "G. W. French's Book Bought 1862, Olympia, W. T. [Washington Territory]." Pages are clean and intact overall but have slight age toning and light foxing throughout and a few small occasional stains. Covers are clean and intact overall but have light to moderate rubbing, a browned spine, and slight wear to extremities. Binding is tight. A Very Good copy. Informative mid-nineteenth century book about hydropathy (also known as hydrotherapy), treatment of various diseases, and maintaining a proper health regimen. Authored by Dr. Edward Johnson. Excerpt from Preface: "It contains, first, a very minutely detailed description of the various hydropathic processes, and directions as to the proper manner of performing them; with an enumeration of the several kinds of baths in use--their comparative powers, their individual effects, their temperature, the manner and times of taking them; observations regarding diet generally, clothing generally, sleep generally, and exercise generally, with necessary cautions concerning all these subjects. Secondly, it contains general observations on the hydropathic treatment; its mode of action on the living system; with remarks on the nature of general and local disease. Thirdly, it contains a detailed description of the symptoms by which each disease is recognized, with its appropriate treatment; and particular directions as to diet, exercise, clothing, &c." The publisher of this book, Fowler and Wells, was founded in 1835 by brothers Orson and Lorenzo Fowler who were later joined by Samuel Wells. Although principally known as a publisher and phrenological institution, Fowler and Wells contributed to scientific fields such as physiology and hygiene.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good.
