Original black and white wood engraved print. Illustrated portrait of Edmund Clarence Stedman who is shown wearing a suit and looking slightly up to the left as he is seated in a chair. The printed portrait area measures 6 1/2" x 8." The entire print measures 9 3/4" x 13 3/4." Print is pristine and intact. This plate was from a collection of 100 and is disbound. A Fine copy. The title and copyright information are printed in the lower-left corner of the print. In the lower-left corner below the portrait is printed text that reads, "Engraved by T. Johnson." A facsimile of Stedman's signature and "Photographed by G. C. Cox" are printed directly beneath the portrait. This is Plate 67 of 100 from the Century Gallery of One Hundred Portraits. Edmund Clarence Stedman (1833-1908) was an American Renaissance man of sorts as he worked during his career as a poet, literary critic, essayist, journalist, banker, and scientist. Stedman's literary work was published in several periodicals. Among his scientific work were designs for airships inspired by the anatomy of fish. Wood engraving is a type of woodcut that is known for its fine detail. The name is a bit of a misnomer because it is not an engraving but a type of relief printing. One of the differences between wood engravings and woodcuts is that wood engravings are carved out of end-grain wood as opposed to long-grain. While still an efficient material in its own right, long-grain wood is sometimes prone to splintering during the carving process.
