Silas Weir Mitchell (1829-1914) was an American physician, toxicologist, psychiatrist, and writer who is credited with discovering causalgia (complex regional pain syndrome) and erythromelalgia (a vascular pain disorder). Mitchell was well-respected in his time for his contributions to science and literature. Mitchell wrote several monographs on a variety of topics pertaining to health such as nerve injuries, rattlesnake venom, and the effect gunshot wounds have upon the nervous system. While Mitchell's specialization was neurology, he also branched into psychiatry. For example, Mitchell was known for his prescription of the rest cure, or bed rest, which Sigmund Freud later used for his own work in therapy. Mitchell was also an accomplished writer in the literary field and wrote many forms of literature including short stories, prose, and poetry. Wood engraving is a type of woodcut that is known for its fine detail. The name is a bit of a misnomer because it is not an engraving but a type of relief printing. One of the differences between wood engravings and woodcuts is that wood engravings are carved out of end-grain wood as opposed to long-grain. While still an efficient material in its own right, long-grain wood is sometimes prone to splintering during the carving process. End-grain wood acts as a remedy to this in that it is more resistant to splintering. Information about wood engraving and woodcuts cited from site[dot]fas[dot]harvard[dot]edu.. Print.
