Original black and white wood engraved print. Illustrated roundel portrait of Washington Irving who is shown in a suit looking toward the left. The printed portrait area measures 5" x 7." The entire print measures 9 3/4" x 13 3/4." Print is pristine and intact. This plate was from a collection of 100 and is disbound. A Fine copy. The title and copyright information are printed in the lower-left corner of the print. In the lower-left corner below the portrait is printed text that reads, "Engraved by T. Johnson." A facsimile of Irving's signature and "After a Daguerreotype by Plumb, About 1850" are printed directly beneath the portrait. Washington Irving (1783-1859) was an American author, historian, and diplomat who is perhaps best-known for two of his stories, "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." Wood engraving is a type of woodcut that is known for its fine detail. The name is a bit of a misnomer because it is not an engraving but a type of relief printing. One of the differences between wood engravings and woodcuts is that wood engravings are carved out of end-grain wood as opposed to long-grain. While still an efficient material in its own right, long-grain wood is sometimes prone to splintering during the carving process.
