JOSEPH ANGELS : 1788 ORIGINAL REVOLUTIONARY ERA BALTIMORE MARYLAND MANUSCRIPT LETTER AND INTERESTING PICTURE OF CONTEMPORARY SOCIAL MORES AND INCLINATIONS

4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Offered is a super, longish 4 page, 12 x 7 and a half inches, folded letter handwritten by Joseph Angels to Mrs Whitman, his sister, dated July 24th 1788 Baltimore [Maryland]. Mr Angels proves to be a bit of a prosaic writer and by being so paints a rather interesting picture of social inclinations and mores of the time in Baltimore: 'I cannot let go so good an opportunity pass without writing by Capt Wheaton fearful lest you might suppose that as soon as I was with one sister I would forget the other. You express a desire in your letter to be particularly acquainted with the situation of our intended sister and her connections; for your satisfaction, as it is ever my wish to inform you of everything.' He goes on to detail 'Miss Barney's' family: Capt. Joshua Barney a renowned Revolutionary War hero by capturing the ship General Monk for the Federalists. He explains how the merchants of Baltimore presented the ship to General Washington. He goes on to detail a horrific, terribly devastating storm and the sudden deaths he witnessed. There is an especially interesting passage wherein he describes a two story building housing 'Ladies of Pleasure' completed destroyed by lightning all dead in a moment. He waxes on somewhat philosophically but shows himself as a moral and decent man that may surprise some.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Very Good
