Justin Perkins was an American Presbyterian missionary and linguist. He undertook a mission to Persia from 1834 which lasted 35 years, with some returns to the USA, and was responsible for the literary form of Assyrian Neo-Aramaic, a Semitic language spoken in parts of contemporary Iran and Iraq, into which he translated the Bible. He was sent to Persia by the American Board of Missions, and ran a mission at Urmia, now capital of the West Azarbaijan Province of Iran. The mission started in 1835 with Perkins, Asahel Grant. Perkins was taught by Qasha Auraham and Mar Yohannan, the Nestorian bishop of Urmia. Mar Yohannan visited the USA with Perkins in 1843., Wilson 169; Hiler 699.
