(Pretoria: Department of Mines, Geological Survey, 1964)

Geological Survey Bulletin 42. 240 x 150 mm; side-stitched wraps; pp. iv + 54, incl. index; 4 text figures; 3 folding diagrams; 1 large coloured folding map in endpocket. Wraps sunned and rather creased; some spotting; page corners curled. Good. English text with Afrikaans summary. 'The earliest published reference to the geology of Durban is by Sutherland (1868), a former Surveyor-General of Natal, in a paper read before the Natural History Association of Natal on June 27, 1868. He identified the main rock formations of the area, recognised the profound influence of faulting upon their distribution, described the occurrence of Recent sands, and stated for the first time the hypothesis that the Dwyka tillite, previously called "claystone porphyry" in the Cape, is a glacial deposit. This last subject he followed up in a second paper published in 1870. ... The principal reports upon the geology of Durban have latterly been those of Krige, published in 1932. Therein, after thorough field-work, were set out all essential facts, and the logical deductions from them. The present authors record with pleasure that their current geological map departs in no major particular from that of Krige though his was constructed upon a much less adequate basis of land survey, and the whole area was remapped de novo upon the Trigonometrical Survey sheets during the years 1948 to 1954.' - Authors' Introduction.
