UK,8vo HB minus dw/dj,1st edn. VG+.No visible owner inscrptn 'per se' but a 'Tippexed' white splodge probably covering a previous one on top corner of an off-set marked front free endpaper. Publisher's bright and reasonably clean,sharp-cornered original red cloth boards with an approx. 1.5" horizontal top portion with bright, crisp,blocked black ink silhouette illustration of two indian elephants with mahouts,each pair at front and end of the illustration with a single-masted,single sail vessel in background and between them,and a single line bordered panel with black lettered title and author name within that to front board,front board's fore-edge withan approx. 1.25" grubbed abrasion with commensurate loss of cloth; black ink blocked thumbnail detail from front illustration to head of a lightly sunned/ faded spine/backstrip with black-lettered title, author and publisher to rest of same - top+foot also with gentle pushing and reciprocal creasing but without any nicks, splits or tears present rear board plain red without decoration or lettering and board's top corner with some cloth wrinkling - all with negligible shelf-wear,bumping or creasing to edges and corners.Top edges with slight ageing/ toning and minimal,sparse foxing/spotting - usual/normal for book's age,fore-edges brighter and less aged/toned and also with minimal,sparse foxing; contents bright,tight,clean with minimal,sparse foxing,solid and sound - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corner tips - possibly unread,other than my own collation.UK, 8vo HB minus issued dw/dj,1st edn,v-viipp+1- 282pp [paginated] includes a 2pp verse Preface, contents list/table with blank verso,11 short stories,7 poems; plus [unpaginated] half-title+ title pages and individual story title separator paages,and to the rear,publisher's 2pp advert/ catalogue for author's other works/titles. Described hard but honestly and fairly - nowhere as bad as it reads or sounds! Visually the exterior appearance is acceptable, and even internally,the book is in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of it's age and nature. It is only the few exterior faults described that prevents a slightly higher grading. Despite them,it really is still an acceptable copy for its cleanliness and brightness. A collection of short stories and some poems/poetry. Written when Kipling was Chief Scout Commissioner, this collection of poems and short stories extolling the Empire were very much part of the times.
