The publication of Victor Klemperer's diaries brings to light one of the most extraordinary documents of the Nazi period. The son of a rabbi,Klemperer was in 1933 a professor of Romance Languages in Dresden. Over the next decade he,like other German Jews, lost his job,his house and many of his friends, even his cat,as Jews were not allowed to own pets.Throughout,he remained loyal to his country and determined not to emigrate, though he became increasingly desperate and pessimistic as the Nazis tightened their grip on power and placed increasing restrictions on Jews.Unlike so many others,Klemperer managed to escape the concentration camps for many years, largely due to his marriage to an 'Aryan',who stood by him through every adversity. In 1945,as he was about to be summoned for deportation,he was able to escape in the aftermath of the Allied bombing of Dresden and he survived the remaining months of the war in hiding and on the run.Throughout these years Klemperer kept a diary, for a Jew in war-time Nazi Germany a daring act in itself. Powerful, precise and clear-sighted,the diaries have been hailed in Germany and outside (the Englisg edition of volume 1, 1933-41,was published in 1998) as a unique record of daily life in the Third Reich. This second volume of diaries begins in January 1942,a month which sees the first deportation of Jews from Dresden. In the long months that follow,Klemperer details the shrinking of the city's Jewish population, the speculation and rumours about their fate in the East, and the increasing certainty that they will never return. He himself is forced to clear snow and work as a labourer in factories. Most of the time he goes hungry.Shocking and moving by turns, Klemperer's diary is a remarkable and important document,as powerful and astonishing in its way as Anne Frank's classic.
