Original black and white wood engraved print. Illustrated portrait of Sir Walter Besant who is shown from a 3/4 view in a suit wearing spectacles and facing toward the left. The entire print measures 9 3/4" x 13 3/4." Print is pristine and intact. This plate was from a collection of 100 and is disbound. A Fine copy. The title and copyright information are printed in the lower-left corner of the print. In the lower-left corner below the portrait is printed text that reads, "Engraved by G. Kruell." "Sir Walter Besant" and "Photographed by Elliott & Fry" are printed directly beneath the portrait. This is Plate 37 of 100 from the Century Gallery of One Hundred Portraits. Sir Walter Besant (1836-1901) was an English author and historian. Wood engraving is a type of woodcut that is known for its fine detail. The name is a bit of a misnomer because it is not an engraving but a type of relief printing. One of the differences between wood engravings and woodcuts is that wood engravings are carved out of end-grain wood as opposed to long-grain. While still an efficient material in its own right, long-grain wood is sometimes prone to splintering during the carving process.
