Lahiri, Jhumpa : The Lowland

Bloomsbury Publishing, London, England, 2013

ISBN 0307265749

First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 340 pages. The author's second novel. One of the most important literary events of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly copies that are signed on a tipped-in page. Published simultaneously in the United Kingdom and the United States in a regular first print run as a hardcover original only. However, the book was launched and released first in the United Kingdom, as evidenced by the fact that Jhumpa Lahiri launched the book in London before proceeding to New York. The First Edition is now scarce. The British Edition has superior production values: Regular-sized volume format. Pictorial hard boards with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Printed on archival stock paper in the United Kingdom to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Jhumpa Lahiri's "The Lowland". The story of two brothers who mirror (in the vivid foreground) an India that is torn apart by the Naxalite revolutionary movement of the 1960's (in the stark background). "Subhash and Udayan Mitra are inseparable brothers, one often mistaken for the other in the Calcutta neighborhood where they grow up. But they are also opposites, with gravely different futures ahead. Udayan, charismatic and impulsive, finds himself drawn to the Naxalite Movement, a rebellion waged to eradicate inequity and poverty; he will give everything for what he believes. Subhash, the dutiful son, does not share his brother's political passion. He leaves home to pursue a life of scientific research in a quiet, coastal corner of America" (Publisher's blurb). What happens next is Jhumpa Lahiri's best book thus far, and by her own admission, the end, not just the culmination, of a remarkable literary journey that began with "Interpreter of Maladies" (1999). As an iconic Indian-American writer, Lahiri's greatest strength has always been the deceptive simplicity and effortless elegance of her prose. Lahiri immigrated to Italy two years ago, candidly saying that she had never felt comfortable living in America (she did not have to tell us that; it's apparent in her work, and was probably one reason publishers rejected it for many years). She now reads and writes (tentatively) in Italian, clearly intent on mastering a beloved third language, after Bengali and English, with grim determination. Whether she will write another book in English is thus a promise she will not make, giving "The Lowland" the sense of an ending, a "sadness" as some commentators have called it that Lahiri insists is simply, the truth. An absolute "must-have" title for Jhumpa Lahiri collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the title page by Jhumpa Lahiri. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing (British Edition) still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce signed copy thus. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Literature in 2000 for "Interpreter of Maladies". One of the greatest writers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER JHUMPA LAHIRI TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).
