Mary Pease Lashbrook (1896-1979) was an American author. She was born in Perry, Missouri and moved to Spokane, Washington in 1904 when she was seven years old. She began her writing career after being inspired from stories told by her husband, Charles Lashbrook, about his childhood in Lemhi County, Idaho. She went on to write articles and stories for the Spokesman-Review, Statewide (a local Idaho news magazine), and a variety of other magazines and periodicals. Many of her nonfiction works focus on local histories. A manuscript handwritten by Mary Pease Lashbrook for the February 1966 issue of True West Magazine. In this article, Mary provides a brief history about the successful effort to have a fort built in Spokane. The federal government had planned to build a new fort somewhere in the Northwest, so upon hearing of the plan in fall 1894, the city of Spokane jumped at the chance to have the fort situated there. However, Spokane had to raise a certain amount of money to fund the project, and the Panic of 1893 and resulting economic crisis made it difficult to do so. The Spokane Bureau of Immigration and the people of Spokane came up with a solution to host a fundraising event. The fundraiser was centered around a Christmas tree at the Auditorium Theater from which donated gifts were raffled off to people who had bought a raffle ticket with a matching number. There was a significant turnout from local residents. Needless to say, the fundraiser was a success and plans moved forward to build the new fort in Spokane.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Very Good.
