Laurent Fries : Orbis Typus Universalis Iuxta Hydrographorum Traditionem Exactissime Depicta 1522 L.F

Black & White, Aside from six small wormholes in the lower section of the image, the map is in very good condition., Size : 332x487 (mm), 13.07x19.17 (Inches)

A fine copy of this rare map, with a strong impression.

Earliest map to contain the word "America". This map was purely the work of Fries himself; he generally copied maps from Waldseemuller's 1513 edition of Ptolemy's Geographia.

"The first of the two modern world maps in the atlas is however Fries' own rendering which is dated 1522 and is initialled 'L.F.' in the main title. Directional lines criss-cross the surface of the map and there is an unusual outer frame whereby banners containing the names of the winds are each linked by looped coils of rope."

England and Scotland are depicted as two separate islands, and India has "become a confusing double peninsula." Although Magellan had by this point reached Tierra del Fuego and the Pacific, his ships would not return to Europe until a few months after this map's publication.

Despite the map's seeming imperfections, it is much sought-after because it "reflects the ambiguities of his [Fries'] age. A framework of medieval thinking is having to be re-cast in order to accept the as yet unrealised extent of the newly conquered lands.", Shirley 48
