First edition of an important work that "gave a new impulse to the study of fossil Cephalopods” (Zittel 402-403). Buch, a German geologist and geographer, was a great traveler and writer and his contributions to nineteenth century geology were enormous. Buch proposed the idea of volcanism: the theory that granite and many other rocks are formed by volcanic action, rather than solely by sedimentation (Werner’s Neptunism theory). Buch investigated the structure of the Alps in an effort to explain their origin. He concluded that they resulted from vast upheavals of the Earth’s crust. He was also the first to observe that Sweden is slowly rising above the sea. His Scandinavian findings are given in Reise durch Norwegen und Lappland (1810: Travels Through Norway and Lapland, 1813).
Alexandre de Humboldt was a Prussian naturalist and physicist, as well as a great explorer. Humboldt made contributions to the study of volcanoes, vegetation and its relation to climate, ocean currents, and mountain ranges. He made a particular study of geophysics, aiming to collect and correlate all relevant data, and played an important role in the international geomagnetic survey of 1834, which determined declinations and inclinations world-wide.
