Black 3/4 leather binding with dark green paper-covered boards. Gilt lettering on red leather spine label. Gilt decorative lines on spine. Five raised bands. 6" x 8 3/4." Pages [iii] iv-xxiii, [1] 2-498, complete. Former owner's signature in black ink on front pastedown and top margin of title page not affecting text. Pages and covers are clean and intact overall. Front joint cracked but holding. Covers have slight wear to extremities. Pages have some foxing. A Very Good copy. A collection of essays by Reverend S. R. Maitland about religion and literature in the "Dark Ages," which he defines as the period from the ninth century to the twelfth century in Europe. Samuel Roffey Maitland (1792-1866) was an English historian, librarian, barrister, and Anglican priest. The essays in this book first appeared in the British Magazine. Maitland began to write for the British Magazine in 1835 and became friends with the magazine's editor, Hugh James Rose.
