This is one of the four prints published as lithographs after the paintings of Major Henry Davis. He served in Canada in the 52nd Light Infantry in the 1840s, painting the sublime scenery around the Falls of Niagara. The lithographs capture spectacularly the "feeling and power of Davis' canvasses," depicting some of "the most romanticized conceptions of Niagara's grandeur." In this view, Davis has conceived a set of rocks that sit above the Horseshoe Falls, although such rocks do not exist. It is probable that the rocks, and the three men upon it, were painted in order to demonstrate the grandeur of the falls. In the distance, a lightning storm showers upon Grand Island.
