Marcellus Laroon (1653-1702) was a painter and engraver from the Netherlands who moved to London where he “became well known for small portraits and conversation pieces…. He also painted numerous small pictures of humourous or free subjects”. Laroon was best known for his series of drawings, “The Cryes of London,” later engraved and published by Pierce Tempest (DNB XI:595). Tempest (1653-1717) established himself as a book and printseller in the Strand in London around 1680. “He is best known by the celebrated ‘Cryes of the City of London,’ which he published in 1711, a series of seventy-four portraits … of itinerant dealers and other remarkable characters who at that time frequented the streets of the metropolis.” (DNB XIX:494)
Brunet indicates that the first edition of 1711 lacked Henry Overton’s imprint as well as individual plate numbers; however, it has been said that Brunet misunderstood the publication sequence.
