A Very Good book in a Very Good dust jacket. This is a collection of autobiographical essays written by Yoshio Markino (1869-1956), a Japanese artist and author. Also featured are several plates of artworks by Markino. He anglicized his surname from "Makino" to "Markino" to prevent mispronunciation. Markino made a variety of illustrations and watercolors throughout his career. His artistic style has been interpreted as a combination of both Japanese and Western influences. An avid Anglophile, Markino spent much of his life in London from 1897-1942 and frequently depicted London street scenes and landscapes in his artworks. Markino was a noted figure of London bohemian circles in his time. This book contains, as he describes in his Preface, "fishes" he has collected in his life thus far. He used the metaphor of a lake to describe life's journey, so his fishes are likely metaphors for experiences that have been positive or enlightening for him. The titles of the Contents are listed as follows: "Friendship," "Hara," "My New Studio," "Emotion and Etymology," "Memory and Imagination," "My Thoughts About the Drama in Japan and in England," "The Post-Impressionist and Others," "The Human Insincerity," and "Wedhampton.". Illustr.: Markino, Yoshio. Book. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Hardcover. Jacket: Very Good
