Some staining to outer edges of boards. Spine slightly age browned. Internally a very clean copy of this scarce book. Kate Marsden (1859-1931), nurse, during the war between Russia and Turkey in 1878. Learning of conditions under which Russian lepers were forced to live, she sought out assistance of Queen Victoria, and the Empress of Russia and in 1891 rode thousands of miles across the wilds of Siberia to bring medical relief to Russia's forgotten wounded, as well as finding a herb which was allegedly a cure for leprosy. One of the first women to be elected a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and founder of St. Francis Leprosy Guild in London.
