California Municipalities was a monthly magazine that was published to help city officials in running the cities they represented. The front cover of one issue states, "The aim of this magazine is to seek for that which is best for the municipality, and to give publication to those things that will aid municipalities to achieve their highest destiny." Topics include funding, taxes, infrastructure, implementation of new laws, and the like. Editor Haven A. Mason was also a community activist and the city clerk of Santa Clara. Mason and Ben Lamborn, City Clerk of Alameda, played key roles in organizing the League of Municipalities in 1898. The League of Municipalities was inspired by the National Municipal League, which was a citizens group that had been founded in 1894 to fight city corruption. The League of Municipalities still exists to this day as the League of California Cities with the main office located in Sacramento. Most of California's 482 cities are represented in the League. The Contents in this issue: "The Model City Idea," "The Coming Convention," "Utilities Under Municipal Ownership in California," "The Care of Roads," "Engineering Phases of the Work of Municipal Boards of Health," Municipal Activity in England," "The Solution of Cleveland Smoke Problem," "Clean Streets and Smokeless Chimneys Demanded," "Septic Tank Action," "How Streets Should Be Cleaned," "The State Municipal Leagues--Unique Advertising--Municipal Insurance," "Increased Value of League--All Sorts of Municipal Ownership," "Municipal Coal Yard--Laxity in Accounting Systems the Cause of Defalcations--Population of German Cities," "The Minnesota Primary Election Law," "Municipal Telephones in England," "Street Grades," "What the Cities Are Doing," and "Newly Elected Officials.".
