King, Sell & Railton // Juta & Co, London and Capetown, 1891

Very good in the original grey pictorial cloth as issued, spine darkened, spine ends and corners worn, a small piece of the frontispiece tissue guard adhering to blank margin of the plate else a clean tight example. INSCRIBED on the head of the preface: "Isaac Shimmin From F. C. Selous Esq. July 30 1892". Isaac Shimmin was one of the first Wesleyan missionaries in Mashonaland, arriving in 1891. He was aquainted with Selous from the late 1880's when they were both in Klerksdorp, and Selous invited him to join the Pioneer Column offering him his own wagon. Due to circumstances he could not do this but arrived the following year . Shimmin was an accomplished hunter. His reminiscences of Selous are included in Millais biography, pp.369-373". A fine association between two notable pioneers of Rhodesia. Selous inscriptions are extremely scarce: this is only the second we have handled in over 40 years.
