Mathis, George : Original Pencil and Watercolor: The Judge George L.Jones Home, Nevada City

Eleven by 16 inches. Titled and signed by Mathis. Original mat and frame. Shows the home located at 236 Nevada Street, Nevada City, California. Judge George L. Jones served as Nevada County Superior Court Judge from 1908 to 1925, when he resigned to become president of the Nevada County Bank. He returned to the bench in 1938 and retired for good in 1947. His parents were the Nevada Co. pioneers Dr. and Mrs. W.C. Jones. Mathis (b. 1909--d. 1977) was a noted and popular California artist who gained fame for his depictions of the Mother Lode area. This original piece of art was commissioned by the Jones family as a retirement gift for Thomas Houston, Judge Jones's grandson (circa 1965). While hand colored lithographs of Mathis's work are quite common, original art is not. Most of the originals of Mathis's work are either owned by his daughter (an art dealer) or were donated to Washington State University, Mathis's alma mater.. Book. Book Condition: Collectible-Fine.
