The first English-language edition. 8vo. 320pp. Red cloth lettered in gold at the spine and upper board with black-stamped panelling and decoration. The backstrip cloth a little faded, with several small areas of further fading to the board margins, and a little bruising to the backstrip ends. Free endpapers browned, and a former owner name inked to the head of the front free endpaper. A very good copy. No dust wrapper. Gorky's novel first appeared in 1908 in the 23rd issue of the 'Znanie' anthology series (Gorky was the director on the Znanie imprint), and the first separate edition appeared just days later, issued by Ladyzhnikov Publishers in Berlin. The present edition, the first in English, was published two years later, translated from the German text by the noted ghost-story writer W.F.Harvey (not to be confused with F.W.Harvey, the Great War poet)..
