McCroskey was an American writer, lawyer, and politician. McCroskey was born in Monroe County, Tennessee and later moved to eastern Washington. In 1895, he was admitted to the state bar in Whitman County. He worked as a lawyer in Palouse, Colfax, and Walla Walla. McCroskey also became Mayor of Walla Walla and was the Democratic candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Washington. One of his most famous writings is a poem called, "The Pioneers of the Northwest," which is an ode to northwestern pioneers amid their trials and tribulations on their journey west. In this collection, there are two poems and two essays. One poem is called, "If We Only Knew," and is a thoughtful meditation that laments the pervasive vice of judgementality. The other poem is untitled but is a Christmas poem. This poem has McCroskey's signature in black pen which reads, "W. E. McCroskey." One of the essays is called, "What Is the New Deal?" In this essay, McCroskey makes a plea to readers to not question the intentions of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal and supports the New Deal by connecting its principles with those of the Declaration of Independence. The other essay is titled, "The Family Home and Christmas Tree," which reflects upon childhood, its connection to the family home and family values, and how Christmas relates to both childhood and family. This essay is signed in blue pen by McCroskey and reads, "Will M. McCroskey." Biographical information about McCroskey cited from "From Our Corner," a Washington Secretary of State blog.. Manuscript.
