A Fine book in Very Good dust jacket. Herman Melville's first book. This is a reprint of Typee which was first published in 1846. This edition features illustrations by Mead Schaeffer (1898-1980), an American illustrator. Schaeffer was hired by Dodd Mead to illustrate their series of reprinted classics which included this title. Schaeffer worked for Dodd Mead from 1922-1930. Typee is a semi-autobiographical account of Melville's stay on the Marquesas. Typee is also a work of travel literature with anthropological elements although Melville admitted his knowledge of Polynesian culture was limited. Throughout the novel, Melville expresses sympathy toward the Polynesians amid prevailing Western views of the time of non-Western cultures being "savage."
