MINERS PHTHISIS COMMISSION : Report of the Miners' Phthisis Commission 1902-1903, with Minutes of Proceedings and Minutes of Evidence

Government Printing and Stationery Office, Pretoria, 1903

Very good in the original pale blue printed wrappers, the wrappers somewhat chipped at extremities, the text block clean and tight. A key document, and very uncommon. Mining in the early days in South Africa could be described as a period of ignorance regarding the dangers of mine dust, and the miners worked under arduous conditions in atmospheres with a very high dust concentration. In 1902 Lord Milner appointed a miner's phthisis commission to investigate the incidence of phthisis among South African miners and to study methods to eliminate the dust hazard. This report revealed that 15,4 percent of the 1 201 miners examined were suffering from miner's phthisis, and another 7,3% were suspect.
