16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. On offer is an original, wonderful, 1941 diary handwritten by Ruth Fogel, a 14 year old Jewish girl living in the Bronx, New York City. One can't help but chuckle when reading these entries of this very bright, truly charming, funny girl who makes wonderful observations on her life and times and then consider them as a counterpoint to Anne Frank's diary, another young girl, but whose experiences are sadly diametrically opposite Miss Fogel's. From February 1st through December 31st in a notebook style book, lives, observes, experiences and writes: Going to Macy's and buys beautiful clothes, vacations at Rockaway Beach and tours museums and candy factories. She is quite intelligent and well read but a teenage girl like any another teenage girl: Listening and sometimes even going to Gracie Allen radio broadcasts, attending other live shows including the ballet and opera, museum trips, a trip to Washington [she was disappointed in the reality of the highly touted cherry blossoms!], discussions of fashion she sees or wears [she provides some very beautiful, detailed descriptions of gowns, etc.] and as is typical of teens: some teachers she dislikes intensely - she said brands one of her teachers a "cheap thing" for not buying more girl scout cookies! She is also a Girl Scout, passing her Tenderfoot level, and collectors or historians interested will find a number of entries with details of troop meetings which included rolling bandages for the Red Cross for the war effort and the 'Bundles for Britain' program. She also gives an interesting snapshot of Pearl Harbor being bombed and their preparations for air raids. Not full but still over 100 pages of diary entries with a summary at the end of the year of her favorite movies, books and the authors and actors. The covers are broken and barely hanging on but present and otherwise the book is G.. Manuscript.
