Montgomery explains his perspectives of what constitutes the proper Christian upbringing of children. He argues that women have the greatest responsibility and influence in child-rearing. He also discusses the importance of instilling Christian principles at a young age, the role of both parents in raising a child, a child's disposition and temperament, encouraging virtue and discouraging vice in a child, and having children regularly engage in Christian practices such as worshiping on the Sabbath and reading Scripture. This is a tract that was printed for the American Unitarian Association (AUA). The AUA was founded in 1825 as a result of the split between Congregationalist churches in New England. The split was roughly formed between Unitarian and Calvinist sects.
