MOORE, Thomas Sturge (1870-1944) : A Fine and Important One Page Autograph Letter to M.A. BAYFIELD, Signed and Dated 28.5.1918

An interesting and important letter. Moore thanks Bayfield for his pamphlet "Our Traditional Prosody" "My personal feeling is that the need is for a new nomenclature. Trochees, anapaests dactyls and iambs are mere fictions as applied to English........If the units of English verse could be given names of their own and not share that of a latin or greek ghost . All difficulty would I believe disappear". A follow-up letter to Bayfield, dealing with English prosody, undated (Attributed to 1919, but in the light of this letter probably 1918), was sold at Bonhams, 29 Mar 2011 London, New Bond Street Papers & Portraits: The Roy Davids Collection Part II LOT 173, and realised GBP660 including premium.
