In this speech, Gouverneur Morris celebrates the Bourbon Restoration and vehemently denounces the French Revolution and the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte. Gouverneur Morris (1752-1816) was an American politician and one of the Founding Fathers. He was a signatory to the Articles of Confederation and the United States Constitution. Notably, Morris served as Minister Plenipotentiary to France from 1792-1794. In France, Morris witnessed first-hand what it was like to live in France during the Reign of Terror. Morris kept diaries of his time in France which provided invaluable insight into the French Revolution. Despite being a central figure of the American Revolution, Morris was generally opposed to the French Revolution and supported the restoration of the monarchy. The Bourbon Restoration began in1814 with the return of the House of Bourbon as a ruling constitutional monarchy in France after the first defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte on May 3, 1814. The Restoration was interrupted in 1815 by the Hundred Days, also known as the War of the Seventh Coalition, during which Napoleon briefly returned to power after his exile to Elba. After Napoleon was defeated again and sent to permanent exile on St. Helena, the Restoration continued until 1830 with the onset of the July Revolution, also known as the French Revolution of 1830. The Bourbon Restoration brought King Louis XVIII to power. Louis XVIII was relatively liberal and kept most of the reforms that had been implemented between 1792 and 1814. Although social unrest remained in France throughout the Restoration, this period was one of relative peace and economic prosperity.. Book. Book Condition: Good. Binding: Soft cover
