MORRIS HANDELSMAN : 1924 NEW YORK INTERNATIONAL GRANDMASTERS CHESS TOURNAMENT SCRAPBOOK INCLUDING HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT SCORING NOTES

12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. On offer is a superb chess collectible being a handmade scrapbook compiled by one Morris Handelsman while he personally attended the historic 1924 New York chess tournament, long considered a 'Battle Royale' and one of the Top 20 tournaments of all time. Truly a rare piece of chess memorabilia. The "New York 1924" tournament, of course, was the New York International Grandmasters Tournament, contested in March and April of that year. Emmanuel Lasker, who had lost the World Championship in 1921 after a 27 year reign, left most of the field far behind, though the current World Champion Jose Raoul Capablanca kept pace with him for a while and handed Lasker his only defeat. Alekhine, Marshall, and Reti also took prizes. There were many great and memorable games played at the tournament, including, most notably, Reti-Bogoljubow (awarded the first brilliancy prize for its pretty finish), Marshall-Bogoljubow (second brilliancy prize), Capablanca-Lasker (third brilliancy prize), Janowski-Ed. Lasker (with an amazing endgame featuring two Knights and three pawns versus a Queen and pawn), Capablanca-Tartakower (with its famous Rook ending), and Reti-Capablanca (which was Capa's first loss in many years). The scrap book contains the New York Times articles describing each day of the tournament. The book runs 64 numbered pages plus 4 additional pages with articles from the Yiddish press. With the book are Handelsman's hand written scoring sheets as shown below. Also included are the NY Times coverage of a Soviet 10 man radio team in 1945, obituaries of Alekhine 1946 and Reshevsky's defeat of Najdorf 1952. Good+. Book Condition: Good+. Binding: Manuscript
