An article reporting an experiment by the University of California Agricultural Experiment Station, which became UC Davis. The experiment tested the effectiveness of gases, such as "chlorine, sulphuretted hydrogen, ammonia, carbon bisulphide, carbon monoxide, carbonic acid, hydrocyanic acid, and carbolic acid vaporized by heat," in killing the white scale insect for agricultural application.
