Byalistok: Aharon Ha-Levi Horvits,, 1824

1st edition. Later Cloth, Folio, 100 + 2 leaves; 34 cm. In Hebrew. Includes the 3-leaf errata/addenda, dated 1828 and with the censor’s name (Tugendhold) and title in Hebrew and Polish (Dodatek do Ksiega Agudath Eizob) , that continued the original pagination (it is numbered as leaves 98-100) which is not present in the Harvard copy and appears to not be present in other copies listed on OCLC (though it is noted by Vinograd) . Alon bakhut l. 80-97. Moses Ze'ev (Wolf) Ben Eliezer of Grodno (died 1830) was a “Lithuanian rabbi [who] was born and grew up in Grodno. He was appointed rosh yeshivah there but left in 1813 to become the av bet din in Tiktin, where he stayed until 1824. He was then appointed av bet din in Bialystok, remaining there until his death. When Moses was first given this appointment, the people in Bialystok were concerned that he was so young, but he wittily replied that this was a fault which would improve with age. His best-known work, Marot ha-? Ove'ot (Grodno, 1810) on the laws concerning agunah, is based upon the relevant chapter (17) of Shul? An Arukh Even ha-Ezer. He also wrote ? Iddushei Moharmaz (1858) , on the commentary of R. Jonathan b. David Ha-Cohen of Lunel to Alfasi on tractate Eruvin, and three works all with the same title, Aguddat Ezov: (1) a collection of sermons (Bialystok, 1824) concluding with Alon Bakhut, nine funeral orations on great rabbis; (2) responsa (2 vols. ; 1885–86) ; (3) novellae on the Shul? An Arukh (1904) ” (Lavine in EJ, 2007) . See also Fuenn, Keneset, 301f. SUBJECT(S) : Jewish festival-day sermons. Jewish funeral sermons. The addenda is particularly interesting as a piece of Hebrew printing history, as there is generally not thought of any Hebrew printing in Byalistok in the 83 years between the printing of this book in 1824 and 1907. OCLC lists 5 copies worldwide (NYPL, JTSA, YU, HUC, British Library) , all with a listing of 97 pages, probably indicating that, like the Harvard copy, they lack the 3-leaf errata/addenda from 1828. Repair to title page otherwise Very Good Condition. (kh-8-51)
