32mo - over 4" - 5" tall. On offer is an interesting, original manuscript pair [2] of diaries handwritten by R. F. Hayes [and occasionally by his wife we believe] dated 1874 and 1879. While not directly stated there seems to be little doubt that Mr. and Mrs. Hayes are lumbermen, carpenters and farmers living somewhere south/south-east of Montreal Quebec Canada frequently working and traveling to towns like Waterloo, Canaan, Montreal, Cowansville, West Shefford and Abbotsford all in Quebec-New York border south of Montreal. The 1874 diary is full of entries and the 1879 diary is about ¾ full. A casual read finds that Mr. Hayes makes coffins, doors, and does much general carpentry. They farm and keep cattle and like many rural inhabitants do just about anything labour wise to earn a living. He turns 54 on January 20th, 1874 and works inordinately hard but that stated he mentions going to his father's home which is a mansion in an area of mansions. Historians and collectors of the time and place will have a bounty to research to learn the specifics of this clearly Anglophone family living in French Canada. Here are some snippets: "Unpacked and arranged furniture in academy A.M. Commenced coffin for Isaac Bourer's boy P.M. Still warm spring weather. Missionary meeting. Made a coffin for Bonnett's child for which he paid me $4.50 cash. Pine and Hemlock. Calm and cool A.M. Warmer P.M. Appearance of storm…Commenced a table for Emma. Edwin went to worship to Grand Division. Supper at 6 o'clock P.M. Getting very cold. I went to Orange (?) meeting. Small attendance. Cold house but I trust some warm hearts. Miner's sawmill burned….." Each diary measures about 3 ¼" x 7 ½" and the covers are worn and pulling away from the binding but the pages and bindings themselves look fine. Overall Fair+.. Manuscript.
