Original publisher's beige pamphlet. 9" x 12." Four unnumbered pages, complete. One leaf is folded in half and printed on all sides. One blue and white illustrated portrait, complete. Printer is listed as Howell-North Press in Oakland. Copyright is by John Howell of San Francisco. Pages are very clean and intact except for a few wrinkles. A Fine copy. The portrait shows "Nelson at Prayer on Sailing into Action on the Victory at Trafalgar, October 21, 1805." Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) was a British flag officer whose leadership and tactical skills brought several victories to the British Royal Navy. This pamphlet commemorates the victory of the British Royal Navy in the Battle of Trafalgar (October 21, 1805), one of the battles of the Napoleonic Wars, and Nelson's famous prayer he made and wrote just before the battle. Nelson lost his life during the Battle of Trafalgar, but Britain successfully destroyed the opposing naval forces of France and Spain to prevent an invasion of Britain. The verso of the front page includes a reprint of Nelson's prayer and a description of the circumstances under which the prayer was made. Also on that page is a reprinted letter of appreciation to John Howell from Captain W. K. Kilpatrick of the U.S. Navy for sending him and other members of the Navy a copy of Nelson's prayer and the portrait illustration. The facing page of the verso includes the portrait of Nelson kneeling with a paper (on which is presumably his written prayer). The back page includes many (brief) letters of appreciation from recipients who received a copy of Nelson's prayer and the portrait from Howell. Recipients included Herbert Hoover, the British Prime Minister, and Mr. Rockefeller, Jr., and Blanche Hersey Hogue, among many others.. Book. Book Condition: Collectible-Fine.
