These letters and Christmas cards were all sent to Malcolm and Matilda (Tillie) Johnson. Mr. Johnson (1902-1958) was an executive vice president at Doubleday, Doran & Co. and then D. Van Nostrand Co., Inc. from 1937-1944. Letter 1 - 3 pages. 8 1/2 x 11. Signed "Cee Gee." On Norris's imprinted stationery. Palo Alto, California. September 19, 1938. With mailing envelope. Charles G. Norris (1881-1945) was a California novelist who wrote from 1914 to 1944. He was the younger brother of the more talented novelist Frank Norris (1870-1902) and the husband of the more popular novelist Kathleen Norris (1880-1966). Norris voices his displeasure at the reception that reviewers have given his novel "Bricks Without Straws" (1938). He writes "I am sore clear through at the lousy reviews I've gotten so far in the east." He adds "I'm blue and discouraged and low" and says "it is my fate to have my books reviewed by newly graduated Vassar girls or short haired blond boys just out of Princeton." After casting passing insults at former editors and his former publishers at Farrar and Rinehart and Dutton, he closes by writing "I groan in spirit." Letter 2 - 11 1/2 x 7 1/2 paper, folded in half and typed on one page. Signed "Cee Gee." On Norris's imprinted stationery. Palo Alto, California. Dated February 8, 1943. Envelope included. A short letter of congratulations to the Johnsons on the birth of their son. Mr. Norris writes, "In these days of stress and tribulation, it is wonderful to have news that brings us so much joy." Letter 3 - Christmas 1943 greeting card, 5 x 7 inches. Enclosed is a 3 3/4 x 5 inch black and white photograph of Charles and Kathleen Norris. There is a printed holiday greeting, but no signature or message. Letter 4 - Christmas 1952 greeting card, 4 1/2 x 4 inches, with snowy western landscape on front. Signed "Kathleen" with the following note in Mrs. Norris' handwriting, "Funerals, arthritis, politics, too - this was the story of '52. But if God is good I may someday see - Friends like the Johnson in '53." Letter 5 - Christmas greeting card, unknown year. 6 1/2 x 5 inches, full color illustration of church on front. Following cryptic message in Mrs. Norris' handwriting, "Tillie dear - Is there something I haven't heard? Loving you always". Possibly referring to the dissolution of the Johnsons' marriage.
