Original advertisement on gray cardstock for the Northern Assurance Company, Limited, of London. No date, circa 1930s-1940s. 9 1/4" x 4." Board is clean and intact overall but is scribbling on the back (ink bleeds slightly onto front). The following is printed: "Northern of London; Established 1836; Entered U. S. 1854; Losses Paid Over $185,000,000." The company offers the following: "Fire, Automobile, Civil Commotion, Tornado, Sprinkler Leakage, Use and Occupancy, and Ocean Marine Insurance." C. E. Allan is listed as the company manager of the Pacific Coast Department at 114 Sansome Street, San Francisco, California. Neville Lee is listed as the Resident Agent at "305 American Trust Co. Bldg., Berkeley, Calif." An illustrated seal in the center includes an emblem of a lion and shield and the following text: "Northern Assurance Company L'td. of London; Est. 1836; U.S.A. 1854." In 1836, the predecessor of the Northern Assurance Company, the North of Scotland Fire and Life Assurance Company, was established in Aberdeen, Scotland. The company was later incorporated in 1848 and changed its name to the Northern Assurance Company in 1898. The company soon expanded both in Scotland and abroad in cities such as Dundee, Glasgow, Edinburgh, London, and Melbourne. After several mergers and acquisitions, the Northern Assurance Company merged with Commercial Union in 1968. Commercial Union then merged with CGU in 1998 and CGU became CGNU in 2000.
