Original cabinet card on beige board. Black and white photograph. Text is in German. Board measures 4 1/4" x 6 1/2"; photograph measures 3 7/8" x 5 3/4." Cabinet card is very clean and intact with minimal age wear and two pieces of tape on back. A fine copy. This is a beautiful photograph that shows the Alter Markrt ("Old Market") which is a historic marketplace in Cologne. In the photograph, crowds of people and the Jon-von-Werth-Brunnen Fountain can be seen below in the city square. Part of the Cologne City Hall can be seen to the left (west), and the Cologne Cathedral is in the distance looking north. "Koln" (Cologne) is printed at the top. Rest of title printed beneath photograph. "Verlag v. Rommler & Jonas, K. S. Hof-Photogr., Dresden, 1893" printed at the bottom. Rommler & Jonas was a German art print shop and publishing company that was co-founded in 1871 by Emil Rommler (1842-1941), a photographer, and Leopold Erasmus Jonas (1839-?), an accountant. Rommler had received his photographic training from his father in Chemnitz and Joseph Albert in Munich. The company also employed other photographers and became well-known for its high-quality photographic prints called collotypes or albertypes that often depicted cityscapes.
