Original cabinet card on beige board. Black and white photograph. Text is in German. Board measures 4 1/4" x 6 1/2"; photograph measures 3 3/4" x 5 7/8." Cabinet card is very clean and intact with minimal age wear and two pieces of tape on back. Very faint marks on upper portion of photograph. A fine copy. This is a beautiful photograph that shows the Hahnentorburg (also Hahnenthor, Hahnentor, and Hahnen Gate) which is one of twelve city gates that were part of Cologne's medieval city wall. Hahnen Gate was constructed during the 13th century, and while the wall was demolished in 1881 to make way for city expansion, many of the other gates and towers, including Hahnen Gate, were preserved and can be seen to this day. "Koln" (Cologne) is printed at the top. Rest of title printed beneath photograph. "Verlag v. Rommler & Jonas, K. S. Hof-Photogr., Dresden, 1893" printed at the bottom. Rommler & Jonas was a German art print shop and publishing company that was co-founded in 1871 by Emil Rommler (1842-1941), a photographer, and Leopold Erasmus Jonas (1839-?), an accountant. Rommler had received his photographic training from his father in Chemnitz and Joseph Albert in Munich. The company also employed other photographers and became well-known for its high-quality photographic prints called collotypes or albertypes that often depicted cityscapes.
