In mediaeval times it was believed that anything written in Hebrew should not be destroyed, but like the human body, be buried. In the concluding decade of the nineteenth century, an ancient Geniza, connected with a synagogue in Old Cairo was discovered, and hundreds of thousands of leaves, containing remnants of Hebrew literature, as well as many thousands of letters, deeds, accounts and other papers of documentary character were transferred to libraries in Europe and America." Following the introduction is a list of the historical documents to be shown at the exhibition. The Cairo Geniza contained about 400,000 Jewish and Fatimid documents that were written in Hebrew, Arabic, and Aramaic. The documents span from about 870 CE to the 1800s and also provide a first-hand look at the cultures and life in North Africa and the East Mediterranean.. Book. Book Condition: Fine.
