ORTELIUS, Abraham : Eryn. Hiberniae, Britannicae Insulae, Nova Descriptio. Irlandt

360 x 490 mm., in fine later wash colour, with some browning in the margin, not affecting the map, otherwise in good condition.

This map of Ireland is one of the most attractive ever published. It is by the great cartographer Abraham Ortelius who compiled the first modern atlas as we know it entitled 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum'. His map of Ireland is derived from his own wall map of the British Isles published in 1564. It first appeared in 1573 in the 'Additamentum' to the atlas. This is an example with French text to the verso from the 1598 edition in the third state with the re-hatching of the coastline. Van den Broecke, M. 22.3; Bonar-Law p. 6-10; Koeman III 57; Van der Krogt 5900:31A.
